There is a lot of mixed messages in the general media about the cost and benefit of eating organic foods.
At least once a year there is a feature in the paper or on TV about how organic food has no nutritional benefit versus non-organic foods. These reports are usually funding by parties with an interest in non-organic farming. If you just stop and think about it for a minute, about the chemicals, the over production, the leaching of soil, the genetic modification, it just makes sense that organic food is better for us as individuals and for the planet too. So what better way to support your group fitness training sessions with Evolution in Sydney, Melbourne or Brisbane, than by fueling yourself with amazing fresh nutritious food? Time to go organic...

The Benefits of Organic:

  • Higher nutrient values - more bang for your calorific buck
  • Secondary nutrients - higher levels of antioxidants called phenolic compounds
  • Protein Quality - is higher in organic meats, dairy and plants
  • Less toxins - organic food is produced without use of nasty chemicals like pesticides, animal drugs etc
  • Better for the environment - from the soil up, organic farming respects the environment as a whole

The Cost Of Organic:

  • So many people say they would love to eat organic but that it just costs TOO much. That can be a easy excuse. So here are our top tips for going organic in an affordable and fun way...
  • Head to the farmers markets - give the supermarket a miss and head to your local farmers market. There are lots of them now in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane. They are a fun and interactive way to shop and generally cheaper than organic at the supermarket
  • Join a food cooperative - these are awesome, a group of like minded people in your local area who deal direct with farmers, order in bulk and divide up the order between their members. Google food coop and your area and they should come up
  • Buy in bulk - this is great especially for meat. Team up with someone and you can order a side of bio-dynamic beef, pork or lamb delivered to your door. The cost per KG works out so much cheaper than buying organic meat a bit at a time, plus this way you are challenged to cook with cuts of meat you otherwise wouldn't which is a great way to expand your cooking skills. Just make sure you have plenty of freezer space to store it all.
  • Grow your own - we live in a country with heaps of sunlight which makes growing veggies relatively easy to do. You also don't need a huge garden, there are great inventive ways of growing on balconies, walls and in tubs and hanging pots.
  • Order online where you have to - for packed good items like tins of food or bathroom items like toothpaste and soap it is best to order online, just watch your carbon footprint!

With some planning and smart strategies in place it really isn't that hard to go organic.

Enjoy,
