On Sunday 4th November, evo Tom, head trainer at our outdoor training group in Maroubra, stepped up onto a platform in front of the 8,000 fun runners to get them ready to perform at their peak over the 10km course at Olympic Park.

In partnership with Movember, we were asked to lead the warm up, moustache included!

So what are the key elements of warming up for a run?

  • Mobility - working the major joints through their range of movement in a safe manner. This is to activate joint fluid and generate warmth in the joints to reduce the risk of injury from sudden high impact.

  • Flexibility - moving the major muscles used in running through flexion and extension so that they are ready to move when the start gun goes

  • Cardiovascular preparation - raising the heart rate and getting blood pumping through the body and to the muscles. This increases the efficiency of the blood to carry oxygen to muscles and starts the chemical reactions required to burn energy required during exercise.
