Striving for Perfection?

Have you ever REALLY asked yourself why you train?

Does it make you feel good?

Is it for aesthetic reasons?

Is it because you can’t ditch the sugar binges out of your day and training enables this?

Is it for your mental health?

Is it because you have trouble loving yourself as you are?

Or is it because you love the social aspect of training with friends before heading off to work for the day?

It’s interesting as a trainer to have that first conversation with a new client. It is generally around what the client currently does or has done in the past, what has worked, what hasn’t and what they’re hoping to achieve through their training with you.

Generally the answers are quite similar- fallen off the bandwagon, looking for a bit of a kick up the backside to motivate them back to a routine, want to tone up and get fitter. (What is tone up anyway?... more on that another time/later)

I always find it really refreshing/fascinating when these answers differ from the norm. Sometimes it is because somebody has had a dramatic life change. Sometimes people have been challenged by a friend or co-worker to compete in some crazy event that they’re in no way, shape or form ready for and other times they’re already super motivated and healthy but want to mix it up a little, add some variety to their regime.

My internal dialogue with these discussions is often quite different. What is the real reason this person wants to ‘tone up,’ find a routine and be held accountable?

Is it because society says we should be this way?

Is the clients self esteem in check?

What are their internal dialogues?

Are there external pressures from loved ones or Dr’s or

Do they have a family history that suggests they’re in trouble if they don’t make some changes?

These discussions take time to unfold. You have to get to know someone first before you blurt out insensitive questions but it is very interesting to see the layers peel back as you get to know a person.

The amazing thing about a group training environment and particularly about the culture and community we have created at Evo is that there is almost ALWAYS somebody in the same boat as that new member. The environment fosters cohesiveness, inclusivity and effort. It challenges members to strive to be better versions of themselves, not necessarily perfect, (because what is perfect?) just AWESOME!

As we head into the summer months many groups see an influx of new members trialing our services and more often than not it is the group dynamics that keep them coming back. Next time you’re partnered up with a newbie or a stranger challenge yourself to uncover something new about them that may give you an insight into what will keep them coming back for more. You might even gain something from the experience!
