Do you hold your stomach in for most of the day, making you feel slimmer and taller? Be honest… ;) Do you know how much this impacts your breathing???

Breathing is a natural part of life right? If we are breathing, we’re alive, and if we’re not, we’re dead? But do you know just how important proper breathing is for your overall health, and more to the point, if you’re not breathing efficiently how it can be harmful?

According to the ‘Tao of Breathing’ 70% of our body’s waste is eliminated via our lungs and the rest through urine, skin and faeces. When our breathing is compromised on a day to day basis, whether it be because of the quality of oxygen you’re breathing in or the quality of your breath it can profoundly impact the flow of blood carrying wastes from your lungs and kidneys. This can then impact our lymphatic system and make it difficult to fight off bacteria and virus’ as well as slowing your digestive system.

The speed at which you breathe is relative to the stress being placed on your body. The higher the stress, the higher your resting heart rate will generally be, requiring your whole body to work harder than it needs to just to function. The flow on effects of this include such symptoms

Neck and shoulder tensions leading to headaches/migraines

Inflammation of gastrointestinal tract and impaired gut function

Impacts your hormonal regulators as well as

Increasing the severity of asthma and other pulmonary obstructions.

So, try this little breathing exercise and think about the following points as you are doing it.

  1. Do you allow your belly to relax and expand?
  2. Do you have trouble keeping your shoulders relaxed and away from your ears?
  3. Do you feel more out of breath when you have finished your breathing?

Close your eyes, put your hands on your belly and take a slow, full breath in. Hold it for 3-4 seconds and then release it as slowly as possible. Repeat 5-8 times

If this all feels very foreign to you, I would suggest you take 8 minutes out of your busy day, watch this You Tube clip by Paul Chek, one of the worlds leading Holistic Health Practitioners, as he guides you through correct breathing techniques.

Create a daily ritual either at the start of the day before you get up or the end of the day before you nod off (or ideally both). Re-train your breathing patterns and it will eventually become a part of your daily existence, leaving you feeling calmer, healthier and more than likely happier!
