How to hold pads and make boxing awesome!

The key to a good work out at a evo boxing sessions is being able to hold pads well for your partner. Their training intensity will go through the roof as will your enjoyment. And remember what you give, you get back in return!

Here are our 6 key points and a great evo technique video to guide you through.

  • Hold the pads at your partner’s face height (hold at their chin height for upper cuts)
  • Move the pads part way towards the punch – don’t just stand there with rigid arms, the impact of the punches will vibrate through you which is no fun and you wont provide the right resistance for your partner. Instead move the pad toward your partners glove as they through their punch about 1/3rd of the distance towards them, then bounce the pad off the glove backwards on contact. Don’t force the pad down onto the glove or restrict the distance of your partners punch and get feedback from your partner.
  • The pads should remain close together – remember you are imitating a face.  No one’s face is half a metre wide!
  • Give the pads some resistance – if your pads are flying back with each punch you need to give them more oomph. This will give you an even better shoulder workout and stop your boxing partner from feeling frustrated by sloppy targets.
  • Don’t tune out – just because you’re holding pads doesn’t mean your mind drifts elsewhere! Stay focused on your technique, count the reps if needed for the drill, keep an eye on those punches so you can time the pads and stay safe.
  • Encourage your partner! – offer encouragement to finish the last few reps, keep working at a tough combo, and work all the way up to the end of the timer.
