Never before have we been more obsessed with gastronomy. Our great restaurants are thriving, there are more TV shows about food than ever before, TV chefs have become the new Rockstars and the rockstar chefs are finally spreading the word about cooking healthy, wholesome food.

Whether they be a tad controversial like Pete Evans or hard working campaigners for the underdog like Jamie Oliver they have got us thinking about creating delicious, healthy, nourishing food where perhaps we may have been a little hesitant in the past.

It poses the question- how will all this education about health, nutrition and real food impact our future generations? All we have heard about for the last 15 years is the ‘obesity crisis’ and the increase of lifestyle related diseases. We were basing our nutritional needs on a now defunct Food Pyramid that has long been linked to the increase in our waistlines and illness amongst the average westerner.

Only time will tell us whether the food campaigners have made a difference but in the world of health surely it can only have a positive impact.

This week Nutrition Australia released a new version of the food pyramid that flips the bottom 2 sections of the previous model around placing the importance on fresh vegetables and fruit and encouraging us to ‘limit’ sugar and salt. It is certainly taking us in the right direction! Hopefully in the not too distant future we will see an improvement in the incidence of lifestyle diseases and illness!
